Off to a great start with a 72-66 win in the MAC/SBC Challenge with a 72-66 win at Texas State.

Newcomer Elli Garnett led the way with 20 points on 6/9 shooting. Returning junior Asiah Baxter scored 14 and led with 6 rebounds. Bailey Tabeling isn't supposed to be running the point this year, but she led the team with 4 assists and the same number of steals despite a cold shooting night.

OUr Bobcats were out shot and basically broke even on the rebounding, but were able to turn their Bobcats over with regularity and shot 17 more free throws. Perhaps the most stunning stat to someone who didn't see the game would be the huge lead in points in the paint by OUr small Bobcats, but a lot of that was transition scoring at the rim.

In addition to Garnett, who appears very quickly to be carving out her own name beyond being Abby's little sister, and Baxter and Tabeling, the other two starters were Clemson transfer Bella Ranallo and Aliah McWhorter.

Good to see last year's starter Monica Williams back. She made both threes she attempted off the bench.

Had that typical one bad quarter a game (third) but thankfully we're able to over one it by playing well the rest of the game.

I watched the fourth quarter and was pleased with what I saw. Overall, statistically, it wasn't a great game but the fourth quarter isolated was good basketball. They had a chunky lead, lost it, but didn't crack and fought back. Many players had A+ moments. Mcwhorter had an athletic and-1 fast break, Scully had an athletic cut and finish down the lane, Garnett showed off the inside and out game, and they got the ball to Tabeling when Texas State needed to foul and she confidently hit the free throws.

There are 14 players on the roster and I counted 12 dressed. Austin not one of them and either Lim or the new player from Europe. 11 played. Here's to that kind of availability for the entire season.

My knowledge of recruiting profiles and past performance tell me Monica Williams might be the most talented player on the roster but only seven minutes last night, though she was 2-2 from three. Still has a heavy brace on her knee from the ACL so it may be a minutes restriction.

My initial worry was given how bad we were last year, we were paired with the worst in the SBC and this isn't exciting. But Texas State was 13-17 (7-11) last year, so getting a road win here seems like reason for optimism.

Great work in the paint. 23 turnovers is too many but they had 34 (!!!). Tough one vs Columbia (an NCAA at-large selection last year) on Sunday.

I watched the rest of this game after the men’s disappointing ending. They looked decent on the road. Hopefully the beginning of a winning season.

92-74 loss to Columbia. I don't how much Columbia returned from their tourney team last season, but they were picked to finish second in the Ivy league this year. This seems like a game we would have struggled to score 55 in the past, so the offensive output is encouraging. You should see the shot spray chart on ESPN. It's like a typical NBA chart. Threes and the paint, but that's it. They forced a lot of turnovers again, but were dominated on the glass by a team that isn't all that huge.

Another poor third quarter where they were outscored by more than their halftime deficit. It's a pattern at this point and they have to figure it out. How does this team continue to come out of halftime so flat?

Ohio defeats Morehead State 76-60 on field trip day. Neither team shot great from the field but Ohio went to the line a lot more (29 vs 15) and made 22 attempts there. They also dominated the glass (52-37) and won the turnover battle (22-17).

Once again they were flat in the third quarter. Lazy and timid bad habits on both ends led to MSU erasing a 19 point deficit down to one possession.

Garnett went down with an ankle injury in the first half and didn't return. Didn't look like she had a wrap of any kind from the bench. Also held out were Machek, Lafler, Moultre, and Austin (when is the last time she dressed?). I sure hope this is not a sign of things to come.

Field trip day is adorable. Bus in 1,000 screaming kids, feed them pizza, send Rufus in to goof around, and they responded big to some Tabeling and Bower daggers late. I would love to chaperone one of these if my kids' schools would do it.

I heard Bob bought all the kids whose school would allow it, some Donato's.

The energy was wonderful from the kids but even they came out flat in the third. Maybe next year's game can be moved up an hour and they can eat after!

Great win, but I'll echo what Bob said in the third quarter: "Groundhog Day." Seriously.

Dani Scully is TOUGH.

Kentucky, who is ranked, beat Morehead by the same margin. And Morehead beat Bellarmine badly; Bellarmine came to town last year and whipped us. (Of course, Chancellor Dugan just retired.)

Only bad thing about yesterday's field trip game is our scoreboard went from 66 to 68.

Appears we might be getting some quality reinforcements next year: Blossom Wallace, first team All Ohio D-! as a junior and Sienna Allen, first team D-V last season have both signed letters of intent. Can't remember last time we signed two all-state first teamers...

Ohio Women made Sportscenter's Top 10 Plays (#8) on Friday with a 55 foot 3-point shot from the far side of the Paw Print.

Unfortunately, that was the opposing team's player that made the shot. Ohio was the home team in white.

At Xavier Thursday, who just lost to Kent State and is a pretty terrible team in the Big East. Then Wright St at home next week, another winnable game. These 2 will show us a lot of how they can compete in the MAC.

Xavier hasn't had a winning season since 2015-16. And every year since then they haven't been anywhere close to .500. That's astounding. I really do think Southwest Ohio is a great high school girls basketball region, much better than boys. They could offer the best and maybe even the second best player at MND, Princeton, Winton Woods, Mason, and Springboro every year and probably have a competitive team. They have one Ohio player and eight different countries represented on this year's roster.

Well things did not go well last night, losing 74-53. Jacked up 37 threes and only made 8 of them. Wasn't much better from 2 or from 1...just real bad shooting across the board.

Last night against Wright State went much better with an 80-66 victory. It was clear from tip off the team was locked in defensively with a strong game plan which they executed well most of the time. For once it was the Bobcats' opponent whose miserable one quarter did them in, as the Bobcats won the second period, 27-6. It was a balanced effort with different players carrying the load at key times and five players scoring in double digits. Aliah McWhorter, one of those, was the key early on finishing at the rim and building the lead, but a little defensive tweak and more physicality but a stop on that. Bailey Tabeling finished the game as the leading scorer with 19 and Dani Scully stepped up again with a career high 11 points. Every player who played more than one minute had at least one steal. These games where the team is able to jump the passing lanes are always fun to watch and listen to, and usually result in a win.

Aside from a lopsided rebounding margin, they put up a brilliant effort losing by five at Davidson who is expected to do well in the A-10 and even lost by only two to top 10 Baylor. Two point shooting wasn't great but Ohio shot confidently from three going 10-24 and were about even on turnovers.

After playing 11 players at Texas State, Ohio played only eight today, including the freshman from Europe who did not play at TSU. I couldn't tell who was dressed and who was in street clothes, but no Williams, Jennings, Moultre, or Laffler (she's always hurt it seems). Are we on our annual injury kick?

Cats win a tight one 72-70 over UIC, who annihilated Ohio last year. Ohio controlled the first half, and yet again they lost the third quarter and even got down by six before rallying. Renallo had a DJ Cooper stat line 18/7/6/5 and McWhorter got the go-ahead points on a crafty move against UIC's 6'4'' center (we should get one of those, TBH).

UIC is Jaya McClure transferred. She was present but not dressed. Short greeting between her and Bob in the handshake line but then Bob had an embrace for someone else on UIC's team. Looked kinda icy.
